Electricity and Magnetism Webquest

Charge, Ohm's Law, Series and Parallel Circuits, Magnets and Electromagnetism

Work through the stops in order. Each button opens in a new tab: finish that stop, answer on your webquest sheet, then come back to this page for the next one.

How it works

1. Get your sheet

Your teacher gives you the webquest sheet (paper or digital). Every answer goes on it.

2. Open each stop in order

Each stop opens in a new tab. Use the sliders and buttons on that page — your answers come from what you see.

3. Come back here

Close the tab, tick Done, and open the next stop. Finished early with a partner? Play the bonus.

The webquest

Stops

  1. Stop 1 · about 12 min · your sheet: page 2, questions 1–6

    Electricity & Magnetism Unit Intro

Read the doorknob ambush, pick a big question, play two labs.

  2. Stop 2 · about 8 min · your sheet: page 3, questions 7–14

Simple Science Videos: Circuits and Electromagnetism

Watch two one-minute videos and fill in the blanks.

  3. Stop 3 · about 10 min · your sheet: page 4, question 15

    Vocabulary

Flip the Word Wall cards and define 14 words in your own words.

  4. Stop 4 · about 14 min · your sheet: page 5, questions 16–23

    E&M Part A: Charge and Ohm's Law

Rub a balloon, test the rules of attraction, run the Ohm's law lab and the wire tester.

  5. Stop 5 · about 13 min · your sheet: page 6, questions 24–32

E&M Part B: Series and Parallel, plus the Lab Bench Circuit Sandbox

Run the circuit lab both ways, switch DC to AC, then expose the Mystery Resistor.

  6. Stop 6 · about 12 min · your sheet: page 7, questions 33–39

E&M Part C: Magnets, Oersted and the Electromagnet Lab

Map a magnetic field, close the switch beside a compass, run four fair electromagnet tests.

  7. Stop 7 · about 13 min · your sheet: page 8, questions 40–44

E&M Part D: Induction, Motors and Generators, plus the Lab Bench Junkyard Electromagnet

Push a magnet through a coil, spin it into a generator, then lift clips with a crane.

  8. Wrap-up · your sheet: page 8, questions 45–46

    Wrap-up: Solve the doorknob ambush

Go back to the doorknob ambush at the top of the unit intro and explain, with what you learned, why a few-thousand-volt spark barely hurts while a 120 V outlet runs a TV all day.

  9. Bonus · for partners who are both finished

Bonus: 1v1 HS Electricity & Magnetism

    1. Only when you and a partner have both finished every stop.
    2. One computer, two players: Red uses the W A S D keys and Blue uses the arrow keys. It needs a keyboard, so it will not work on a phone.
    3. Press Enter the Arena, pick a game, and play to 3 wins.

Students move through six free tobinscience.com resources in order: the Electricity & Magnetism unit intro, two one-minute Simple Science videos, the unit vocabulary, the full Electricity & Magnetism section (Parts 1–5: a balloon-rubbing simulation that counts the electrons, the rules of attraction with a distance slider, charge on a conductor vs. an insulator, an Ohm's law lab with a live current-voltage graph, a wire tester, a series and parallel circuit lab that works every number and shows both current directions, DC vs. AC, a magnetic field viewer, two magnets, a compass beside a wire, an electromagnet lab that checks for fair tests, a coil-and-moving-magnet generator and the motor vs. generator table), two Virtual Lab Bench labs (Circuit Sandbox and Junkyard Electromagnet), and a 1v1 review game for early finishers. Every answer comes from what the page shows, matching SPS10a–c.

SPS10 · Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the properties of and relationships between electricity and magnetism.
Time: about 80–85 minutes (two 45-minute periods, or one block)

What students need

  • One Chromebook or computer per student (the 1v1 bonus needs a keyboard and two students on one computer)
  • Headphones are optional (the two videos are about one minute each)
  • No student accounts or sign-ins; nothing to install

Every stop at a glance

Good to know

  • The Charge Lab tests, the sort scores, the endless practice scores and the Lab Bench Mystery Resistor and clip target are randomized, so those answers vary. The simulation readouts (balloon charges, attraction strengths, the Ohm's law lab, the wire tester, the circuit lab, the electromagnet clip counts, the generator meter, the Lab Bench Circuit Sandbox and crane rule) are fixed, so those match the key.
  • Stop 1 activities award volts that are saved only on that device; students write their score on the sheet.
  • The intro's Electromagnet Lab opens on its Challenges tab; the sheet uses the Free build tab (20 turns, 1 battery, thin iron nail, touching the clips lifts 10 clips there). The page's electromagnet lab at Stop 6 uses a different scale (the same setup lifts 6 clips) and the Lab Bench crane a third (2 clips): each tool is its own model, and the sheet asks for each tool's own numbers.
  • Every unit on the sheet is written in words (ohms) because the sheet prints only what Arial draws; the page itself uses the ohm sign.
  • The 1v1 bonus is for pairs who have both finished. It is head-to-head review of the whole electricity and magnetism unit.
  • The page also has more endless practice sets (charge, circuits, magnets, electromagnets, induction and the mixed Part 6), the plan-and-carry-out electromagnetism investigation, worked examples, real-life cards, a myth-or-fact set, a 10-question practice bank and the series-or-parallel sort that the webquest does not visit. They make a good warm-up the next day.
  • Short on time? Stops 1–3 make a good first day and Stops 4–7 a second day.
  • The printable student webquest and its answer key come with the Word / PDF webquest download. This page holds no answers, so it is safe to post.
